From April to September, I spend one night a week out on the Fraser River near Fort Langley in a dragon boat. This is my second year as part of a recreational women's dragon boat team.Our first regatta took place on May 26 at False Creek in Vancouver. It is actually part of the Pacific Ocean, but the first fellow to foray up the "creek" thought it was a tributary of the Fraser River; thus the name False Creek.
It was overcast, but pleasant throughout the day. Our team, the Paddle Pushers, was in the first heat of the day at 9:00 am. We managed 3 minutes and 44/100 of a second in the first 500 metre race. In our second race, our time was down to 2:51, which was great for us. We were back up to 3:00 for the third race. It will be interesting to see how we improve in the summer regattas.
False Creek is a "dress up" regatta, so we decided to be hippies. That is why there are so many tie-dyed shirts in the photo above. The photo, below, shows our team in the closest boat near the end of our first race of the morning. I am the second paddler from the back on the near side of the photo.
